Bensalem Hires Four New Firefighters via Federal SAFER Grant

The Bensalem Fire Rescue Department has officially expanded its ranks, welcoming four new career firefighters to the force this week. The new hires were made possible through the federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant, a program designed to help local municipalities increase their “front line” firefighter numbers to meet industry safety standards and improve 24-hour staffing.

In a formal ceremony, Mayor Joe DiGirolamo and Public Safety Director William McVey swore in the new recruits, emphasizing the township’s dedication to maintaining a high level of emergency preparedness. By utilizing federal funding, the township is able to bolster its emergency response capabilities without placing the immediate financial burden solely on local taxpayers.

These additional personnel will be stationed throughout the township, which covers a diverse landscape of residential neighborhoods, high-traffic commercial zones like Street Road, and industrial hubs near the Delaware River. The increase in manpower is expected to significantly improve response times for fire suppression, technical rescues, and medical emergencies. Adequate staffing is a critical factor in firefighter safety, ensuring that enough personnel are on-scene to perform hazardous tasks according to state and federal safety guidelines.

Bensalem Township Council members and fire department leadership expressed their gratitude for the SAFER Grant program. As the community continues to grow, these four new members will play a vital role in protecting the lives and property of those who live and work in Bensalem.

The new firefighters have been sworn in and will begin their integration into the department’s daily operations immediately.
