The Bensalem Township School District is kicking off the new year by turning the spotlight on the volunteers who steer the district’s vision. January has been officially designated as “School Director Recognition Month” across Pennsylvania, and Bensalem is joining the state in honoring its nine elected school board members.
These local officials, who serve as unpaid volunteers, are being recognized for the time and effort they dedicate to managing the complex needs of the district’s schools, staff, and students.
While many residents might only see school board members at public meetings, the district notes that the role involves significant behind-the-scenes work. According to the announcement, board members average over 20 hours a month on district business. Their responsibilities range from voting on the district’s $189 million budget to adopting official policies and conducting comprehensive planning for the future.
The current board oversees a massive operation that includes nine schools, over 6,400 students, and more than 1,100 employees, ranging from teachers and administrators to support staff.
The district is encouraging residents to thank the current board members for their service: President Dr. Deborah King, Vice President Stephanie A. Gonzalez Ferrandez, Esq., Rodger Allen, Rachel M. Fingles, Esq., Leann Hart, Rebecca Mirra, Esq., Heather Nicholas, Kate Pascucci, and Karen A. Winters.
