*Update* With temperatures forecast in the mid-90s and heat indexes expected to exceed 100 degrees, cooling centers will now be open through Sunday, July 24.
June temperatures broke records around the globe and Japan recently had its first ever 104-degree day. Now it’s our turn. Bucks County has issued an excessive heat warning for today and tomorrow. They have provided a list of cooling stations open to those 55 and older as well as those who are unhoused. While none of the stations are in Bensalem, there are options available in the Township.
This is the county’s first Excessive Heat declaration under a plan developed by county Emergency Services and the Health Department with assistance from the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Area Agency on Aging.

Who’s most vulnerable to extreme heat?
Historically, older adults have been most at risk. However, over the past few decades, they’ve benefited greatly from the spread of air conditioning and more effective messaging to deliver heat warnings.
But not everyone can take advantage of AC. For instance, homeless people or day laborers who spend their days outdoors are increasingly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Reach out to your family, friends, and neighbors to ensure they are safe.
Heat waves are growing longer, hotter, and more frequent, and scientists and officials are exploring ways to keep people safe.
We as a community have to do the same.
